Front Door Bed

About 103 sq ft (about 30 x 2.5-3 ft) · east-facing, sunniest at the door, shadiest at the Bed 5 corner · bone-dry eave strip along the foundation · 12 plants

The formal front foundation bed: a woody skeleton of three weigelas, native perennials in front, and a dry-shade kit under the eave. It wraps the corner and connects directly to Bed 5.

In the ground: purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), garden phlox 'Early Blush Pop' (Phlox paniculata 'Early Blush Pop'), red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica) x2, Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) x2.

Not Ohio native: weigela 'Wine & Roses' (Weigela florida, non-native) x3, cranesbill 'Rozanne' (Geranium, hybrid) x3, bluestar 'String Theory' (Amsonia, US native, from the A. hubrichtii lineage of the Ouachita Mountains), Virginia sweetspire 'Scarlet Beauty' (Itea virginica, US native), alumroot 'Caramel' (Heuchera, hybrid with a hairy alumroot parent), alumroot 'Northern Exposure Silver' and 'Paris' x2 (Heuchera, hybrids).

Next: white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata) along the eave strip to cover September and October, the bed's one real forage gap.
