North Shade Alley

About 56 sq ft · north wall, morning sun only · 10-12 in bone-dry eave strip (driest spot on the property), drip line, rain zone · Dry Upland Oak-Hickory (CEGL002086) · 1 plant

What looked like a hosta monoculture is August lily (Hosta plantaginea), the fragrant one. Its white trumpets open at night and bloom from late July into September, overlapping garden phlox 'Jeana' in Bed 1 and carrying on after it ends. The hostas stay; natives fill in around them.

In the ground: August lily (Hosta plantaginea, non-native). The flowers were scented all day, not only at night, and bumble bees worked them in daylight. Possible seedlings near the clumps would be unusual this far north. Slugs (Deroceras) were chewing the leaves in September.

Next: white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata) massed along the drip line (spring 2027). Eave kit: Pennsylvania sedge (Carex pensylvanica), bristleleaf sedge (Carex eburnea), woodland stonecrop (Sedum ternatum), wild ginger (Asarum canadense), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides). Spring ephemerals (Virginia bluebells, spring beauty) wait until I know why spring beauty failed elsewhere on the property. A night iNaturalist session at hosta peak.
