Woodland Corner

67 sq ft, inner fenced bed plus an outer wrap around a utility pole · dry shade under the silver maple, center opened by utility trimming · the best soil on the property · Rich Cove Forest (CEGL007027) plus Mesic Mixed Hardwood · 21 plants in the ground, 2 likely lost

The spring ephemeral bed. It now flows into Bed 11 with no lawn edge between them. The utility pole's base is rotting, so outer-zone plants are treated as expendable.

Spring ephemerals: great white trillium (Trillium grandiflorum), prairie trillium (Trillium recurvatum), bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), Dutchman's breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), rue anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica), shooting star (Dodecatheon meadia).

Persistent: mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum), wild ginger (Asarum canadense), Solomon's seal (Polygonatum biflorum), wild geranium (Geranium maculatum), foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), northern maidenhair fern (Adiantum pedatum), golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea), red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis), lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina), male fern (Dryopteris filix-mas, added 2026, native but rare in Ohio), foamy bells 'Pink Revolution' (Heucherella, hybrid).

Fall and woody: big-leaved aster (Eurybia macrophylla, listed in older references as Symphyotrichum macrophyllum; blooming since July, well ahead of its published range), bluestem goldenrod (Solidago caesia), gray dogwood (Cornus racemosa, 5-6 ft wide; fruit used by 40+ bird species).

Likely lost: spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), wood poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum). Verdict at April 2027 emergence.

2026: Great white trillium had a stress year with no bloom. Spring beauty emerged and collapsed in the dry spring, its second failure on the property.

Next: figure out why spring beauty failed before any retry (potted plants or fresh seed rather than dried corms). Option: spicebush (Lindera benzoin) for the spicebush swallowtail.
